When I think about MIMI Tran, then I imagine luxurious, beautiful and rich dresses. Mimi Tran is the designer's brand, which empowers today’s woman by producing apparel in contemporary styles. All the gowns are made of luxuriant materials, where each piece has an elegant look and a sophisticated touch. By the way, label's spring collection will be showed this September at Nolcha Fashion Week.
Anyway, today you have chance to read my interview with label's CEO and director of design Mimi Tran, check it out below.
When did you know you wanted to be a fashion designer? How did you get into fashion?
I always wanted to be designer, since I was a little girl I was surrounded by models and fashion people in Paris so I always saw myself becoming one.
What's it like being in the industry? Are there any "battles" between designers? Do they spy to use ideas from each other?
Life in the industry is crazy. It’s a little scary that people may not want to wear the collection that you’re working so hard on. The worst nightmare would be that a designer can’t find anyone who wants to wear their designs.
No battles that I’m aware of. I look at the top designers and I allow them to inspire me to do better and push myself to create better collections. It’s really not a battle… I respect the other designers because designers are artists and I believe there should be no conflicts or disrespect between artists.
At the end of the day we are in the same boat. If people don’t like our collections, we don’t survive. One thing we have in common is that we all want to be the best and we should look to each other’s work to inspire and push our own to make a difference in the fashion world – in fashion history.
How would you describe your brand and design aesthetic? Tell us about your collections, fabrics use, production.
Our brand is the example of the classic beauty the sensual femininity and the conservative at the same time. Our design is not just one thing it’s three things at once: Classic, sexy, and conservative.
We have two collections, the one that was inspired by classic Hollywood where everything seemed so glamorous and romantic, we use luxurious silk. For the couture collection, most of them are made of a combination of tulle, silk chiffon, intricately detailed hand beading, and carefully selected unique 3-D lace.
Where do you go for inspiration?
I was born with the Asian ethnicity and grew up with a European style and culture and now reside in the USA where I spent most of my adult life and am influenced by American culture and style. My inspiration comes from a unique blend of all of these.
Is there any place in the world you haven’t been to yet but would like to visit from a professional perspective?
New York. I haven’t ever been to New York, the biggest center of fashion in the world. Its an honor for our brand to be showing and featured in Nolcha as part of our New York City debut. Can’t Wait.
Describe your working day? How it starts? What's the best time to get up? What's your breakfast? Is it important for you to eat before you work? Or it's just a coffee and you ready to create?
I am definitely more of a night owl than a morning person. I wake up, make breakfast for my kids and get them off to school then go back to my desk and start working. I work throughout the day until the kids are home from school and then resume work after they have gone to bed. I tend to stay up very late – because I believe at night when everyone is asleep is when I find the most peace, I can concentrate and come up with my best creative designs without any interruptions.
How active is your lifestyle?
I am very active. In addition to keeping up with kids and two dogs, I have a strenuous workout routine that I’m pretty dedicated to. I also enjoy cooking in my free time – I believe a healthy body begins with a healthy mind.
Who do you think is the ideal woman/man of your brand?
Our ideal woman is a sophisticated and ambitious. She is confident and sexy. She know what she wants and she’s not about to let anything stop her from getting it.
How would you describe your personal fashion style?
When I was young I always loved dresses but I couldn’t afford to buy them. I told myself one day I would be a designer and make my own clothes.
I like a classic look, sexy enough to be confident and unique enough to stand out.
Most of the clothes I wear, I have designed them, I know what I want and I know what looks good on me and what’s better than a fashion designer who wears her own creations?
Can you tell us about your Spring collection?
As a new designer I have been learning from each piece. Until recently I have had many beautiful designs that were strong pieces on their own, but I was testing the materials and honing my design skills – determining what looks good, what doesn’t work. Each piece has taught me something new about myself, my process, and how to refine my ideas.
Spring Summer represents our first set of designs that really fit together into cohesive collections. As I said, for SS we will be showing two collections: one inspired by classic Hollywood glamor which features our signature fabric, and the other is a couture line inspired by European style.
For anything else, you’ll have to see our runway show at Nolcha on September 8.
