Interview With Carmakoma Fashion Designer Heidie Lykke

Hello everyone! I had chance to speak with Heidie Lykke, who is one of the creative directors behind Danish fashion brand Carmakoma. Before I share with you our sweet chatting, I'd like to spread a word about this amazing clothing label. So, Carmakoma is based in Copenhagen, in the heart of Denmark. What's is so special about it, then it's the beauty of the clothing size, which is perfect for any ladies body type (specially curvy ones), giving every woman opportunity to wear elegant apparel without compromising their own beliefs. Anyway, it's time to show you our lovely conversation:

Please tell me what Carmakoma stands for?

Carmakoma is the name of a song by British band Massive Attack that we both have a connection to. It reminds us the time when we met each other. We both went to the same school of design and we connected immediately. Also we have made up 2 muses: Carma (for the feminine role in Carmakoma design universe) &a Koma (for the rock-chic part)

Why did you decide to focus on plus size fashion?

Whenever we went out together after school, we always talked about, and wondered, why curvy women always hiding themselves in big and not very flattering clothes. We wanted to make a difference! Change the way curvy women dress. And after 10 years in the fashion industry where Angelica and I were working with standard size clothing we quickly found out that many curvy girls and women are searching for fashionable and trendy clothing, that's why we have decided to change the rules within "plus-size" clothes. Show curves, and show off!

How has your work evolved since you began your label?

Very! We live and breath this segment of clothing! We simply love it! Everyday, we are looking for even more exiting and luxurious fabrics for our designs. By the growing success and international interest we can expand the collections with more styles and even more daring designs. For instance we are launching a Denim sub-label – which is cool and daring jeans apparel.

What is the philosophy and main inspiration for you?

Love what you do. If you don't love your work, then it will never inspire you! This is our heart. Carmakoma is heart-made clothes. We have our fingerprints in every single style and in every move Carmakoma is making. It is our baby.

Do you think the Internet helps or complicates the life of designers?

We find a lot of our inspiration on the Internet. We could not do without it! For us Carmakoma is born on the Internet. Our flagship store is on the net! When we went to China with our first collection with 15 styles back in 2008 they almost did not wanted to produce the clothes when we said the shop was only on the Internet. Well, we sure proved, they were wrong!

What are you fascinated by at the moment and how does it feed into
your work?

With SS15 our inspiration comes from the different moods women choses. Both some Romantic and rebellious. And mysterious and dangerous. Like A Hitchcock movies or Blade Runner. We look at women on the Streets, listen to both new and old music and watch movies. Its all about finding the right mood in a collection to create the perfect styles.

What is the biggest lesson that you have learned since you started your fashion career?

It might sounds corny and old, but never doubt in your dream. Believe in it, and just do it. If you don't try, you will never know. And there is not a single Day any for us is in doubt if it is the right thing we do. Even here when Angelica Weiss is working hard and everyday she is looking after her little baby, and I, Heidie, is due with a little boy- anytime! We Are living a dream and its so unreal sometimes that We have to pinch our arm to understand.

How do you balance creativity with commerce?

We believe that there is only commerce with creativity. If we don't believe in our designs and in the Carmakoma Universe, why should our customers.

Do you have a specific research process when you start a new collection?

We find inspiration everyday But we always talk about what way our collection should move. With mood boards we slowly create the look of the next collection. Things that inspire: colours, fabrics, patterns. It is like a cool music-video. It moves all the time and has so much rhythm.

Who inspires you the most in fashion? Anyone who stands out?

We get inspiration from all over ! I personally, very found of Alexander Wang. He creates both commercial collection and still he is innovative and creative. The Alexander Wang Universe is a success and many can relate to it. To me and Angelica both creativity and business must go hand in hand.

What are the biggest difficulties in your creative routine?

Time! It seems there is never enough time! We get so caught Up in the process that it is hard to let go when creating. And when one collection is done - we are looking for new inspiration, drive and looks!

What advice would you give to young designers?

Again, do it. Believe in it. Never give Up before you KNOW you did your Best! And prepare your idea and be solid and expect to spend ALL your time with your project. Don't expect it to be easy. It's not. But it is so freaking fun and fabulous.

Tell me please about your SS2015 collection.

It demonstrates how beautiful and mysterious woman can be. There are styles for every mood and there are no rules. Curves are out and free!

Where it will be possible to purchase your apparel? is always open and we Are shipping our styles to every little corner in the world. Carmakoma is also represented in almost all big chains on the Internet. We are very fortunate and proud.
